The vision

Farming the whole system, not just the crop.

KOA—Kauaʻi Organic Agroecosystems—is a model ecological farm built on a simple, old idea: that a piece of land thrives when every part of it is in relationship with every other part. Water feeds the kalo; the kalo feeds the people; the buffalo build the soil; the soil feeds the trees.

Set on roughly twenty-five acres of leased Grove Farm land in the Līhuʻe region of Kauaʻi, the farm is a working example of regenerative agriculture rooted in the Hawaiian ahupuaʻa—the traditional practice of caring for the land in one continuous flow from the mountains to the sea.

The herd

The water buffalo of Kauaʻi.

Water buffalo were once on Hawaiʻi’s list of restricted animals. After roughly three years of work with the state Department of Agriculture, the first four—pregnant females—arrived from Arkansas in 2019. Don Heacock called it “a dream come true.”

That small herd has since grown to around fifty, and new animals have been brought in to widen the bloodlines and keep the herd genetically strong. Moved paddock to paddock, the buffalo graze down invasive grasses, press seed and nutrients back into the earth, and build living soil that stores carbon—while pointing toward a future of island-raised dairy that never has to be shipped across an ocean.

Kalo · taro

Kalo is the heart of the farm and the heart of Hawaiʻi—the plant from which, in the old stories, the Hawaiian people themselves are descended. At KOA it grows in long, spring-fed rows, tended by hand, harvested into muddy bundles of corms that carry generations of nourishment.

Around the loʻi the farm also cultivates ʻawa and other traditional and useful plants, alongside aquaponic systems where tilapia and taro grow together in one balanced loop.

Aquaponics

Fish and plants, one balanced loop.

Drawing on a lifetime of aquatic science, KOA raises tilapia in aquaponic systems where the water that nourishes the fish also feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water in return—a small, closed circle that mirrors how the whole farm is meant to work.

The farmer

Don ‘Lalakea’ Heacock

Aquatic Biologist · Founder of KOA

For roughly four decades, Don Heacock served as an aquatic biologist with Hawaiʻi’s Department of Land and Natural Resources—the Kauaʻi district biologist who spent his career studying the island’s streams, reefs and watersheds and the delicate connections that keep them alive.

KOA is where he brings that science home to the land. Guided by the Hawaiian ahupuaʻa system—caring for a place in one unbroken flow from mountain to sea—he has built a farm that treats water buffalo, kalo, fruit trees, fish and soil as a single living community. His work makes the case, patiently and by example, for a way of farming that heals the ground it grows on.
